The St John Passion is a dramatic representation of the Passion, as told in the Gospel of John, constructed of dramatically presented recitatives and choruses, commented by reflective chorales, ariosos, and arias, framed by an opening chorus and a final one, followed by a last chorale. Compared to the St Matthew Passion, the St John Passion has been described as more extravagant, with an expressive immediacy, at times more unbridled and less “finished.” |

Latin American rhythms swung into St Peter’s, when Patrick McCarthy conducted the Witham Choral Society and the Colchester Philharmonic in a performance of Ariel Ramirez’s Navidad Nuestra. “It is a folk drama of the Nativity,” explained Patrick, “based on the rhythms of Hispanic America, which is both touching and great fun.”
The audience was also treated to more traditional music: Vaughan Williams’ Christmas Fantasia and Finzi’s beautiful In Terra Pax, as well as being encouraged to join in well-known Christmas carols. |

Mozart Requiem, Vivaldi Gloria |
In the Radio 3 Mozartathon in January the Mozart Requiem was voted to be the all time favourite out of Mozart’s many compositions. An impressive list of experienced soloists, Gill Wilson (soprano), Elaine Henson (mezzo-soprano) and Stephen Holloway (bass) joined us in this concert, together with the choir’s favourite tenor from the Royal Opera House, John Upperton.
Press Review : “ …… Vivaldi’s Gloria was well controlled throughout, with several moments of great beauty adding much to the performance and the perfect balance between choir and orchestra was a joy …… Mozart’s Requiem was also polished and well-balanced …… the quartet was seamlessly matched. The chorus responded to every nuance of the score and sang the work with great feeling …… “ |
